Schmalkalden er en by og kommune i den tyske delstat Thüringen, beliggende i Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen. Byen har 19.501 indbyggere.
Den 1. november 2010 kom Schmalkalden i nyhederne, fordi der i byen spontant opstod et krater på 20 meter dybt og en diameter på 30-40 meter. Ifølge den geologiske service i delstaten drejede det sig om et sækgrav. En parkeret bil forsvandt i krateret, men ingen mennesker kom til skade.
