Gemeinden Amtsberg ligger mellem floderne Zwönitz og Zschopau. Det højeste punkt i byen er Dittersdorfer Höhe med 553 m. Bydelen Dittersdorf er en skovhufendorf. Det ligger i en sydvest-nordøstlig retning fra Zwönitztal til Dittersdorfer Höhe. Bydelen Weißbach ligger syd for Amtsberg i vest-østlig retning. Øst for Weißbach ligger bydelen Schlößchen, et tidligere forarbejde. Bydelen Wilischthal ved samlingen af Zschopau og Wilisch ligger syd for Weißbach og Schlößchen.
I nord grænser byen Chemnitz med bydelene Einsiedel og Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain op til kommunen, i vest Burkhardtsdorf med bydelen Kemtau, i nordøst Gornau/Erzgeb., i øst Zschopau i syd Drebach med bydelen Grießbach og i sydvest Gelenau/Erzgeb.
