Ernstbæk udspringer 500 m nordøst for Hof Mappen i Rheingauer baglandsskov på området af byen Eltville am Rhein nær det tidligere Rheingauer Gebück. Få meter under kilden krydser han Gebück-linjen og strømmer på sin vej mod vest gennem området af Hof Mappen, som ikke længere tilhører Rheingau. Derefter træder han ind i baglandsskoven, som han ikke forlader før udløbet. Her beskriver han, afvigende fra sin generelle vestlige retning, en bred bue mod nord omkring Ziemerskopf. Derefter modtager han som den vigtigste biflod fra venstre Wickersheller Bach ved Wickersheller bro.
