Stiftet Quedlinburg blev grundlagt i 936 på foranledning af Mathilde, enke efter den østfrankisk-tyske konge Heinrich I., som døde i 936, af hendes søn Otto I. på Burgberg i Quedlinburg. Det var i sin natur et kongeligt familie-stift og blomstrede hurtigt efter grundlæggelsen takket være rige gaver. Hovedopgaven bestod i at mindes, det vil sige i at ære mindet om Heinrich I., som døde den 2. juli 936.
Det “Kejserligt frie verdslige stift Quedlinburg”, som det officielt blev kaldt indtil sin opløsning i 1802, var et fællesskab af ugifte døtre fra højtstående familier, der ønskede at føre et gudfrygtigt liv i dette kvindestift. Begrebet “verdslig” i navnet skal forstås som modsætning til “klosterlig”.
