Wettelroda blev første gang skriftligt nævnt i perioden 830-850. Sogneleder siden 28. april 2016 er Tim Schultze. Indtil 2005 var Wettelrode en politisk selvstændig kommune. Den 1. oktober 2005 blev den indlemmet i Sangerhausen.
På den vestlige kant af den tidligere mineby ligger Röhrigschacht, hvor kobberskifer engang blev udvundet. I DDR-tider fungerede den som vejrschacht for Thomas-Müntzer-skaftet. Det er det eneste minerale museum med egen lift i Sachsen-Anhalt.
