Darum sind die verschiedenen Sorten Tonerde aus diesen fossilen Meeren angepasst, um allerlei Sorten Keramik anzufertigen: gewöhnliche Tonware, Steingut, Dachziegel, einfache oder feuerfeste Ziegelsteine, feine Fayence. Für Porzellan dagegen wird Kaolin benötigt (eine total weiße Tonerde, die reich an Alaun ist). All das hat die Tonerde von Andenne so bekannt gemacht.
Die Bestandteile jeder Keramik sind dreifach:
• Plastische Mittel (Tonerde)
• Entfettungsmittel (Sand)
• Schmelzmittel (Kalk)
Je reiner diese 3 Bestandteile werden, umso mehr geht man über von gewöhnlicher Tonware (zerbrechlich, undurchsichtig, dunkel) zum weißesten Porzellan (hart, kristallartig, durchscheinend). Die Produktion wird eingeteilt nach der Farbe der Fragmente, den benötigten Entfettungsmitteln, den Schmelzmitteln, den Glasurmitteln und natürlich auch der Backtemperatur.
