Rubens war ein Sammler und Liebhaber von allem, was schön war. Heutzutage würde er sein Herz in der Kloosterstraat mit ihren zahlreichen Antiquitätengeschäften anheuern. Er fand dort einen der größten Schätze seines Lebens, seine erste Frau Isabella. Hier stand das Haus ihres Vaters, Jan Brant. Das frisch verheiratete Paar wohnte eine Zeitlang bei ihm. Auch der Kartograf und Geograf Abraham Ortelius wohnte in dieser Straße.
Die Straße verdankt ihren Namen der legendären Sint-Michielsabtei, die bis 1124 die einzige Pfarrkirche von Antwerpen war. Rubens vollendete hier das Altarbild Anbetung durch die Könige. Die Franzosen nahmen es mit und gaben ihm einen Ehrenplatz im Louvre. Nach Waterloo kam es im Königlichen Museum der Schönen Künste unter.
