Im Zentrum von Herne zieht der aus massiven Steinblöcken errichtete Kirchturm die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Es ist die St. Petrus-und-Paulus-Kirche. Das heutige Gebäude hat ein Langhaus und ein Seitenschiff im romanischen Stil sowie einen Chor und einen Turm im brabantischen Scheldegotik. Typisch für diesen Stil sind die vier Ecktürmchen um den Helm. Auffällig ist das Alter der Gemeinde: Herne wird erstmals 844 als „Herinium“ erwähnt und bedeutet vielleicht „Siedlung bei dem Stein“.
