Der Caterpillar von Wim Delvoye steht seit 2003 an der Mittelkerker Seepromenade. Das Exemplar, das jetzt zu sehen ist, ist jedoch nicht das Original. Das originale Werk wurde noch im selben Jahr nach Ground Zero in New York verlegt. Der aktuelle Caterpillar steht seit 2004 dort und erhielt im Mai 2019 eine spektakuläre Erweiterung mit dem dazugehörigen Flatbed Trailer. Gemeinsam schaffen sie ein neues, imposantes Kunstwerk von 21 Metern Länge. Caterpillar + Flatbed Trailer gehört zu Delvoyes Caterpillar-Reihe aus 2002. Mit dieser Sammlung bemerkenswerter Baumaschinen schmiedet er einen zeitlosen Schmelzpunkt zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. In diesem Werk symbolisieren der Kettenbagger die moderne Zeit und die Dekorationsmuster einer gotischen Kirche die mittelalterliche Welt.
