An dieser Stelle stand über Jahrhunderte ein Kirchengebäude, das zu einem Wallfahrtsort um das 1596 angespülte wundersame Marienbild heranwuchs. Es war eine der ältesten Wallfahrtskirchen der Region.
Kurz vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde bereits daran gedacht, die baufällige Kirche zu ersetzen. Während des Krieges wurde die Kirche vollständig in Trümmern geschossen.
1919 wurde zunächst eine Notkirche errichtet, danach entwarfen das ostende Architekten-Duo Charles Pil und Henri Carbon die Pläne für ein neues neo-romanisches Kirchengebäude, das 1923 vollendet wurde.
Die Kirche mit dem Marienbild ist nach wie vor ein Wallfahrtsort für Fischer aus der Umgebung. In den Glasfenstern werden viele Wunder dargestellt, die dem Wundertäfelchen zugeschrieben werden.
