Die Cévennes sind ein Gebirgszug, der zum Massif Central gehört. Der höchste Punkt ist der Mont Lozère (1702 m). Sein hügeliges Terrain hatte historische Auswirkungen. Die Cévennes hatten eine hohe Konzentration von Hugenotten (Protestanten), da sie sich hier in den Cévennes im 17. Jahrhundert verstecken konnten. Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts erhob sich diese Bevölkerung, die als Camisards bezeichnet wird, gegen die Monarchie. Diese Ereignisse stehen nicht in keinem Zusammenhang mit der Landschaft der leicht versteckbaren Orte.
