Ende 2005 eröffnete der französische Präsident Jacques Chirac das Centre Européen du Résistant Déporté. Das Zentrum, das den deportierten Widerstandskämpfern gewidmet ist, befindet sich nur wenige Schritte vom Gelände des Struthof, dem einzigen Nazi-Konzentrationslager auf französischem Boden, im Elsass-Tal etwa 50 km südwestlich von Straßburg. Im Konzentrationslager Natzweiler-Struthof sind Deportierte aus ganz Europa gestorben. Es handelte sich hauptsächlich um politische Gefangene, Gegner des Naziregimes und Widerstandskämpfer. Ab 1943 trafen sie ein: Norweger, Niederländer, Belgier, Franzosen, in Erwartung ihres Prozesses in Deutschland. Nach dem Sommer 1944 kamen hier ebenfalls Zigeuner und Juden aus den Ghettos und anderen Konzentrationslagern an. Alle wurden sie im Arbeitslager eingesetzt.
