Monemvasia bedeutet 'einzelner Eingang'. Diese Eigenschaft als Halbinsel verlieh ihr eine einzigartige geographische und strategische Lage. Im 6. Jahrhundert flohen die Griechen aus Laconia hierher vor den Slawen. Im 13. Jahrhundert wurde es das Handelszentrum der Peloponnes. Der berühmte Malmsey-Wein wurde von diesem Punkt aus versendet. Malmsey ist der englische Name für Monemvasia.
