Die touristische Region Donegal ist nach der Stadt Donegal im Süden des Landkreises benannt. Sie war auch als County Tyrconnell oder Tirconaill (Tír Chonaill) bekannt, nach dem historischen Gebiet. Der County Donegal war die Heimat des einst mächtigen Clann Dálaigh, dessen bekanntester Zweig der Clann Ó Domhnaill war, der in Englisch besser als die O'Donnell-Dynastie bekannt ist. County Donegal war während der Großen Hungersnot in Irland in den späten 1840er Jahren eines der am stärksten betroffenen Gebiete von Ulster. Große Teile des Landkreises wurden verwüstet, viele Gegenden wurden dauerhaft entvölkert. Zahlreiche Menschen aus County Donegal emigrierten zu dieser Zeit, hauptsächlich über den Hafen von Foyle.
