Torre Grossa wurde 1310 erbaut. Die Türme in San Gimignano dienten einst der Verteidigung gegen Angriffe von außen. Die wohlhabenden Familien konnten auf diese Weise ihre Macht und privilegierte Stellung demonstrieren.
Der höchste Turm von San Gimignano, der Torre Grossa auf der Piazza del Duomo, ist für Besucher geöffnet.
Der Turm ist 54 Meter hoch und hat 218 Stufen nach oben. Die Stufen sind mit kleinen Kindern leicht zu erreichen. Das letzte Stück nach oben muss über eine steile Leiter bewältigt werden. Sie befinden sich dann an einem schönen Aussichtspunkt. Die Aussicht ist fantastisch.
