Der Name Bronkhorst wurde um das Jahr 1000 erstmals erwähnt, als ein Nachkomme von Bruncharus, dem ersten Grafen von Hameland, eine Siedlung mit diesem Namen gegründet haben soll. Seit 1482 besitzt Bronkhorst Stadtrecht.
Die Stadt wurde planmäßig am Fuß des Schlosses der Herren von Bronckhorst angelegt. Zu den am besten erhaltenen Altertümern zählen die Kapelle und ein paar Häuser mit Treppengiebeln sowie einige Wohnhäuser mit Holzarbeiten in den Außenwänden. Das Schloss, die Stadtmauern und die Stadtgräben sind verschwunden.
