BBC Travel wählte Giethoorn als eine der 6 schönsten Grachtenstädte der Welt aus. Diese kleine Stadt außerhalb Amsterdams entwickelte sich in Sümpfen. Die Lösung der Torfstecher des 12. Jahrhunderts war es, Kanäle zu graben, um ihre Waren zu transportieren. Giethoorn besitzt noch 6,4 km Wasserwege, durchzogen von mehr als 150 hölzernen Fußgängerbrücken, mit üppigen Vorgärten, Häusern mit Reetdächern bis zum Rand des Wassers. Die Straßen erstrecken sich nicht bis zur zentralen Altstadt. Die 2.500 Einwohner gelangen meist von einem Ort zum anderen mit Punterbooten.
