Seit jeher wird im Südlimburg Kalkstein abgebaut und als Dünger sowie als Baumaterial für Häuser, Kirchen und Festungsanlagen verwendet. Der Abbau von losem Kalkstein für industrielle Anwendungen (Rohstoff für die Zementproduktion und die Düngemittelherstellung) erfolgt in offenen Gruben. Beim Tagebau wird zunächst die etwa 15 Meter dicke Deckschicht abgetragen und anschließend wird das Kalksteingebiet von oben nach unten abgebaut.
Die Grube 't Rooth ist eine Mergelgrube, in der im Tagebau Mergel abgebaut wird. Die Grube wurde teilweise umgestaltet und hat sich zu einem einzigartigen Naturschutzgebiet entwickelt, in dem sich verschiedene seltene Pflanzen- und Tierarten angesiedelt haben.
