After the Belgian-Italian migration agreement of 1946, in which Italy received Belgian coal in exchange for the opportunity to send workers to Belgium, around thirty thousand Italians arrived in the Charleroi region at the height of that migration. Following the closure of the Walloon coal mines, it is believed that only 20 percent of them returned to their country of origin.
