The Berlin Animal Shelter is operated by the Animal Welfare Association for Berlin and the Surrounding Area Corp. e. V. With an area of 16 hectares, it is one of the largest animal shelters in Europe. The facility is located on Hausvaterweg in Berlin-Falkenberg.
The predecessor of the Berlin animal shelter is the Lankwitz animal shelter, which had been located in Dessauerstraße in today's Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf since 1901. It was considered one of the first animal shelters in Germany. On the site of the old animal shelter, the Kurfürstenviertel, a single-family housing estate, was built in 2001. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the animal welfare association also took over the tasks of the East Berlin animal shelter, which was located in Schicklerstraße in the then Mitte district until 1991.
