The route starts at the parking lot of the Zwart Water Nature Reserve, north of Venlo. You follow the route counterclockwise and travel through the Lower Rhine, the German region between the Dutch border and the Rhine. The unpaved roads on the route are mostly gravel roads and sometimes forest roads, which are easily passable. However, after rainy periods, a small portion of the gravel roads / forest roads becomes less accessible, this applies to a part of the Stegerdijk near Schandelo and for the forest road along the water treatment plant north of Wachtendonk. The route soon goes over a gravel road through the Zwart Water Nature Reserve, then turns onto an asphalt road and cycles one and a half kilometers on a bike path along the federal road between Venlo and Straelen. Then there are gravel roads and some climbs over the Heronger Heights. The route then leads to the Wankumer Heide with many gravel roads through this nature reserve. And then you ascend the Taubenberg on a gravel road (the highest point of the route).

Through the valley of the Nette and on only a few gravel roads, you cycle into the catchment area of the Niers. Around the Niers, you come to narrow gravel roads, which are also popular with hikers (especially on Sundays and holidays in good weather). You cycle through the beautiful town of Wachtendonk with its castle ruins and historical center, and then continue on gravel roads along the Niers. You cross the Niers by a ferry, which you have to operate yourself! Then you follow the Nette a bit on the gravel bike path.

Then you enter the agricultural area, where you mainly get asphalt roads for the bikes and you cycle to Wankum, which is located on a plateau; this is a somewhat boring part of the route until just after Wankum. After Wankum, there are some gravel roads at Alt-Broekhuysen in an expansive agricultural landscape, and you cycle on gravel tracks to Straelen. After descending the ridge near Straelen, you quickly reach the Netherlands. Just before the border crossing is the farmer's café Jacobs, where you can enjoy delicious cakes and pastries (they have a wide selection).

In the Netherlands, you cycle for a long time on gravel tracks through the nature areas Lommerheide, Schandelosche Heide, and Zwart Water, which provides a very nice conclusion to the route (North Limburg (Maasduinen) is, for good reason, a beautiful area for gravel).
