Bacares is a Spanish municipality in the province of Almería in the community of Andalusia, located in the Almanzora valley and 73 km from the provincial capital Almería. Its population in 2021 is 250 inhabitants. The term "Bacares" seems to derive from the Arabic "baca," meaning 'cattle ranch' - a place where livestock is kept or a neighborhood of huts and shepherds. The term also comes from the same root as the Latin "vacca." Transhumant livestock farming has been a significant activity in Bacares during the Middle Ages of al-Andalus and up to the 18th century, which would confirm this hypothesis.
