The Hortus Botanicus is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world (1682), originally intended as a medicinal herb garden.
In the Hugo de Vries laboratory (1912) designed by architect Joan van der Meij, some elements of the Amsterdam School style are already recognizable in the decorative brickwork.
At number 9 on Plantage Parklaan lived the geneticist Hugo de Vries. He had his own gateway directly opposite his residence. Through that gateway, you have a direct view of the Gunnera (a plant with mammoth leaves with a diameter of up to 2.50 meters).
A little further lies the beautiful Palmenkas, which was specially built to honor Hugo de Vries.
