The Steurgat is a waterway in the province of North Brabant and forms an important shipping route in the Biesbosch. The Steurgat flows from the Nieuwe Merwede near Werkendam toward the Biesbosch. The tidal creek starts at the Biesbosch Lock and initially separates the so-called Northwaard and the Oostwaard of the Biesbosch. Both areas have been used for agriculture for a long time, although the Northwaard has recently been re-diked as part of Room for the River. After about seven kilometers, the Steurgat splits into a southern branch, heading towards the Spijkerboor and the Amer, and a broad western branch. The latter branch forms the boundary between the Northwaard and the Southwaard of the Biesbosch and flows toward the Hollandsch Diep.
