Poco deja entrever que aquí alguna vez hubo una aldea. Solo el nombre de la creek (Roeselarekreek) da una pista sobre el pasado. Aquí estaba Nieuw-Roeselare, fundado en 1241. Pero su fin llegó por las aguas crecientes de una tormenta en 1374. En el siglo XIV, el pueblo obtuvo derechos de ciudad antes de su final. La fatídica tormenta de 1374 no fue, sin duda, la única de su tipo en ese tiempo. Entre 1214 y 1530, se registraron más de 45 tormentas en el Mar del Norte.
