Gevaerts Noord es un área natural a lo largo de la orilla del canal, en el valle del Zuidleie. Está gestionado por la asociación sin ánimo de lucro Natuurpunt. Hasta principios del siglo XX, los barcos fluviales eran remolcados por fuerza humana o equina. El camino de tiro que antes se había construido en la ladera del canal se ha erosionado completamente en algunos lugares, dando lugar a las empinadas orillas, que ahora son un lugar de reproducción favorito para el martinete y la golondrina de río.
