Hamont-Achel es uno de los municipios Teuten más importantes de Noord-Limburg. Es en Limburg el único municipio donde los Teuten (comerciantes itinerantes) y los trapenses se encontraron. Muchos patrimonios aún recuerdan a los Teuten. Achel alberga además el único monasterio trapense de la provincia.
