El pueblo de Cotthem se encuentra en una ladera, en un entorno boscoso. Hace siglos debió haber vivido un tal Cota. Cotthem es de hecho una deformación del germánico Cota haim, que significa 'el lugar de residencia de Cota'.
El pueblo se sitúa entre Oombergen, Hillegem y Sint-Lievens-Houtem. Todo allí respira calma y silencio. Entre el generoso verde aún se encuentran antiguas viviendas con carácter, algunas de las cuales han sido transformadas en un restaurante.
