La ciudad central de Petershagen, es decir, Petershagen sin las localidades circundantes, se encuentra, salvo por algunas casas del "Brückenkopf", inmediatamente al oeste del Weser, en la desembocadura del Ösper. Frente a ella, en la orilla este, se encuentra Petershagen-Lahde.
Hasta el 31 de diciembre de 1972, Petershagen era una ciudad en el distrito de Petershagen y sede de la administración del distrito. El 1 de enero de 1973 se fusionó con varios municipios para formar la nueva y significativamente más grande ciudad de Petershagen.
