La Plaza del Canal de Ponce se encuentra entre la Porta de La Caleta y el Baluarte de los Mártires.
Francisco Ponce Cordones es el descubridor a través de sus investigaciones históricas del Canal Bahía-La Caleta , que dividía en dos islas lo que hoy es el centro de Cádiz durante la época fenicia.
Los fenicios fundaron Gadir (1104 aC) en lo que entonces eran dos islas, Erytheia y Kotinoussa , separadas por un canal que conectaba el Océano Atlántico con la bahía. Con el tiempo, el cauce del río fue cicatrizado hasta desaparecer debido a los sedimentos del río Guadalete y la intervención humana, configurando el aspecto actual de la ciudad. En La Caleta, durante la marea baja, la barrera de coral se puede ver en el fondo del mar, separada por un canal de arena que conectaba el Atlántico con la bahía.
