La cresta de Thiaumont ha sido conquistada y abandonada muchas veces por unos y otros, y está coronada por una granja al este y una estructura al oeste, construida en 1887. Entre estos dos puntos se encuentra hoy el gran osario de Douaumont.
De la estructura que fue volada por la artillería alemana sólo quedan algunas varillas metálicas y bloques de hormigón dispersos. El 23 de junio, una violenta ofensiva alemana partió de esta cresta, envolviendo la obra bajo un dosel de proyectiles.
