En julio de 1896, una compañía alemana estacionada en Metz realizó maniobras y construyó un puente de madera. Los escultores tallaron una placa conmemorativa en la arenisca para dejar constancia de su paso. También excavaron una "cámara" en una roca cercana. ¿Podían imaginar que durante la guerra de 1939/45, los soldados rusos, prisioneros de guerra en Ban Saint-Jean, escaparían y se refugiarían en esta "cueva"? Los habitantes de la zona les llevaron comida por solidaridad.
