Bath fue fundada, en medio de colinas circundantes, en el valle del río Avon alrededor de fuentes termales naturales donde los romanos se bañaban y construyeron un templo, dándole el nombre de Aquae Sulis. Edgar fue coronado rey de Inglaterra en 973 en la abadía de Bath. Mucho más tarde, se hizo popular como balneario durante la época georgiana, lo que llevó a una gran expansión que dejó un legado de ejemplar arquitectura georgiana hecha de piedra de Bath.
La ciudad se convirtió en sitio del patrimonio mundial en 1987 y cuenta con una variedad de teatros, museos y otros lugares culturales y deportivos, que han contribuido al desarrollo de un importante centro para el turismo, con más de un millón de visitantes que se quedan y 3,8 millones de visitantes diarios al año en la ciudad.
