La iglesia fue construida en 1659 en estilo barroco, con el "internado del monasterio para mujeres protegidas" adyacente construido en 1684. Fue ampliada y embellecida en el siglo XVIII y restaurada nuevamente en el siglo XIX. La estructura del edificio se ha mejorado en los últimos años para adaptarlo mejor a las necesidades modernas.
El 24 de abril de 1647, los cuatro concejales municipales fundaron una Casa de Mujeres Convertidas o Acogidas ("pecadoras convertidas"), para evitar los pecados y las tentaciones del diablo. Esta institución se llamaba "Casa de las Hermanas de la Penitencia" y debían vivir gracias a las limosnas del pueblo y según las reglas del obispo de Mazara del Vallo; fueron obligados a someterse a prácticas penitenciales y severos castigos corporales .
