Desde Cortina d'Ampezzo, montamos en bicicleta por el Passo Tre Croci, junto al hermoso lago de Misurina con sus terrazas, hacia las terriblemente empinadas Tres Cimas de Lavaredo. El 1 de junio de 1968, el joven de 22 años Eddy Merckx fue el primero en cruzar la meta aquí, bajo la nieve y el granizo. Motta recibió más de 4 minutos de desventaja y Gimondi, nada menos que 9 minutos. Desde entonces, todos supieron el supertalento que era Merckx.
