Laren se convirtió en un pueblo de artistas y forasteros en 1892 con la llegada de la línea de tranvía a Hilversum y Ámsterdam, conocida como el Asesino de Gooise. En el siglo XIX, los pueblos de Gooise fueron descubiertos por artistas que establecieron la Escuela de Larense. Algunos conocidos pintores que se quedaron en Laren fueron Anton Mauve (maestro de Vincent van Gogh), Jan Sluijters y Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig.
