Saint-Amand a fondé en l'an 630 deux abbayes à l'endroit où la ville de Gand est née par la suite. L'abbaye Saint-Bavon se situait à la confluence de la Lys et de l'Escaut (le nom celtique ancien Ganda signifie d'ailleurs embouchure), l'abbaye Saint-Pierre était plus au sud, sur la colline de Blandijn. Au cours du 9ème siècle, un établissement commercial s'est développé autour de l'abbaye Saint-Bavon, mais il a été détruit plus tard par les Normands.
