Comme si les pillages des armées au 17ème siècle n'étaient pas suffisants dans cette région, les soldats infectèrent la population locale avec des maladies telles que la peste, la dysenterie et les maladies vénériennes. En 1678, une grave épidémie de peste éclate ici à Sint-Laureins-Berchem. Les malades sont mis en quarantaine dans une "cabane" qui a ensuite conservé le nom de lieu "'t Zieckhuys".
