Huningue est situé sur le Rhin au coin des Trois Frontières: suisses, allemandes et françaises. Le nom de Huningue apparaît pour la première fois dans un document daté de 828. Comme c’est un point de franchissement du Rhin, Louis XIV, en 1679, y fait construire par Vauban une forteresse que Bâle, ville suisse voisine considérera toujours comme une menace. La forteresse jouera son rôle de verrou durant 136 ans. Après 1815, elle est démantelée sur exigence de la Suisse.
