L'empereur Charles a abdiqué à l'âge de 56 ans. Trois jours après avoir abdiqué en 1556, il quitta la Flandre pour Yuste, dans l'Estramadure espagnole. Là, il avait fait construire près du Monastère de San Jeronimo un petit palais pour y passer le reste de ses jours. Pour ce dernier voyage, il embarqua à Vlissingen. Après treize jours, il atteignit la côte asturienne.
