Le château date à l'origine du XIIIe siècle. Le premier château a été détruit au XVIe siècle et reconstruit en 1594. En 1634, la maison alors inhabitée est tombée aux mains d'une bande d'aventuriers dirigée par Théodore Cauwenberg, qui a rendu la région dangereuse. Des troupes de Liège et d'Aix-la-Chapelle ont ensuite assiégé le château et l'ont démantelé. En 1833, les restes ont été nivelés pour construire le château actuel. En 1880, le château a été agrandi.
