Qui si trovava un tempo l'antico villaggio di Ixelles, una delle 19 comuni brussellese. Il Maelbeek, che nasce poco più in alto vicino all'Abbazia della Cambre, formava qui stagni naturali in cui i monaci allevavano pesci. Due di questi stagni sono ancora visibili, il terzo è stato riempito e trasformato per creare questa piazza. Il Maelbeek è stato invece coperto. Il magnifico edificio dell'Istituto Nazionale di Radiodiffusione, che ha emesso dal 1930 al 1960, è un edificio in stile Art déco classificato dell'architetto Diongre, soprannominato "il Transatlantico".
