Poco lascia sospettare che qui ci fosse mai un villaggio. Solo il nome del canale (Roeselarekreek) dà un suggerimento sul passato. Qui si trovava Nieuw-Roeselare, fondato nel 1241. Ma giunse alla sua fine a causa delle acque in aumento di un'alluvione nel 1374. Nel XIV secolo il villaggio ottenne diritti di città prima della sua fine. L'orrenda alluvione del 1374 non fu certo l'unica della sua specie in quel periodo. Tra il 1214 e il 1530 furono registrate più di 45 alluvioni nel Mare del Nord.
