Adolphe Sax nacque nel 1814 a Dinant. Figlio di un costruttore di strumenti, iniziò una formazione musicale a Bruxelles in giovane età. Il suo strumento preferito era il clarinetto, ma Sax iniziò presto a sperimentare e tentò di sviluppare nuovi strumenti. Nel 1835 presentò un complesso clarinetto basso, nel 1841 si presentò all'esposizione industriale di Bruxelles con un sassofono. Tuttavia, in Belgio non ricevette il riconoscimento necessario e fondò a Parigi una fabbrica di strumenti che divenne un'azienda con oltre 200 dipendenti.
