Nel 1972, la VMW costruì nel IJzerbroeken, vicino all'area naturale di De Blankaart, un grande bacino di accumulo in cemento: ha forma ottagonale e occupa 120 campi da calcio (60 ha). Può contenere 3 milioni di m³ d'acqua: più che sufficiente per fornire acqua potabile a un terzo della provincia costiera ogni giorno. Quell'acqua viene pompata dall'IJzer e dai torrenti circostanti e nel centro di produzione dell'acqua accanto al centro viene trattata per diventare acqua potabile sana e gustosa.
