San Arnoldo di Tiegem nacque intorno al 1040. Inizialmente divenne cavaliere, ma dopo la morte del padre nel 1070 entrò come monaco a Soissons, dove visse da eremita. Fu inviato due volte in Fiandre come pacificatore.
Nel XV secolo e successivamente, le reliquie furono trasferite a Tiegem, prima nella chiesa parrocchiale. Solo nel XIX secolo il culto si spostò nella foresta di Holdenbroek, rapidamente ribattezzata bosco della cappella. Lì c'era una sorgente e una cappella. Nel 1817 fu costruita la piccola cappella di San Arnoldo, che ancora oggi è presente.
Nel 1860 iniziò la costruzione della grande cappella, e successivamente del luogo di pellegrinaggio.
San Arnoldo è il santo patrono dei birrai.
