La Petersburg era una cittadella nel sud-est della città di Osnabrück. Essa esisteva nella prima metà del 17° secolo durante la Guerra dei Trenta Anni e doveva aiutare a far rispettare la Controriforma nella città.
Nel 1618 l'imperatore Ferdinando II confermò alla città di Osnabrück i suoi privilegi e la libertà alla confessione di Augusta. All'inizio della Guerra dei Trenta Anni, la città dichiarò la sua neutralità. Nell'ottobre del 1625, Francesco Guglielmo di Wartenberg fu eletto vescovo di Osnabrück. Egli cercò, come il suo predecessore, di far rispettare la Controriforma a Osnabrück. Nel 1628 Francesco Guglielmo arrivò in città con la Lega Cattolica e ordinò la costruzione della cittadella Petersburg, da utilizzare per rinforzare le fortificazioni di Osnabrück e come propria residenza.
