Il nome è una composizione del nome del fiume Bode e dell'aggettivo freddo, un aggettivo di origine altotedesca e medioaltesca rimasto invariato da allora. I nomi della Bode Fredda e della Bode Calda sono nati dalla differenza di temperatura di circa 2 °C.
La Bode Fredda nasce nell'Oberharz ai piedi del Brocken, nella parte sud del cosiddetto Brockenfeld, direttamente al confine con la Bassa Sassonia, a nord di Braunlage, presso Bodesprung. Nelle immediate vicinanze si trovano le origini della Grande Bode, della Ecker e dell'Oder. Inizialmente, la Bode Fredda scorre verso est in direzione di Schierke, lungo il versante nord del Wurmberg. A Schierke cambia direzione di flusso verso sud.
