Cognac è un comune francese di 19.468 abitanti situato nel dipartimento della Charente nella regione della Nuova Aquitania.
A Cognac fu siglato nel 1526 l'accordo con cui, per contrastare lo strapotere di Carlo V, gli stati regionali allora presenti in Italia si strinsero in un'alleanza, in modo da salvaguardare l'indipendenza della penisola. Tuttavia esso si rivelò ben presto fallimentare: nel 1527 la Lega subì una cocente disfatta e Roma fu messa al sacco dai Lanzichenecchi, mentre a Firenze veniva instaurata la Repubblica.
