Bath è stata fondata, in mezzo alle colline circostanti, nella valle del fiume Avon attorno a sorgenti termali naturali dove i Romani costruirono bagni e un tempio, e le diedero il nome di Aquae Sulis. Edgar fu incoronato re d'Inghilterra nell'abbazia di Bath nel 973. Molto più tardi, divenne popolare come località termale durante il periodo georgiano, portando a una grande espansione che ha lasciato un'eredità di esemplare architettura georgiana realizzata in pietra di Bath.
